1. General Information on Deutschland Scholarships in Mannheim

How many Deutschland Scholarships are awarded?
The number of scholarships depends on the total number of students enrolled at the University of Mannheim and on the funds the University receives from donators. In the academic year 2018/19, 155 scholarships were awarded.

What does the scholarship include?
The financial support totals €300 per month. Moreover, the University puts scholarship holders in contact with their sponsors. This can lead to non-material support such as internship opportunities, invitations to events, or participation in a talent development program.

What does non-material support mean?
The non-material support includes mainly offers from the sponsors, such as internships or invitations to events. Moreover, the University of Mannheim organizes a ceremony in which the scholarship holders receive their certificates at the beginning of each academic year. The festivities include also a get-together with the sponsors. You can find pictures here: https://www.uni-mannheim.de/stipendienfeier-2018/

How long do scholarship holders receive financial support?
The University strives to award scholarships for the duration of the standard period of study in a degree program but the scholarship is initially allocated for one year. An extension depends on the scholarship holder’s performance and on further funding agreements with funding organizations. Student performance is examined each spring.

How is the decision on who receives a Deutschland Scholarship made?
The admission committees of the faculties decide who receives a scholarship.

Who is the sponsor of my scholarship?
Deutschland Scholarships are financed one half each by the government and by private sponsors.

According to which criteria are scholarship holders selected?
The focus is essentially on performance in school and in university. But the University also takes social engagement or sports achievements into consideration. Personal circumstances such as a migratory or non-academic background are also taken into account.

Where can I find further information on the scholarship program?
Further information is available on the Federal Ministry of Education and Research’s website: www.deutschlandstipendium.de.

The University would like to take special personal circumstances as well as performance and engagement into account when selecting scholarship holders, and encourage students with a migratory or non-academic background. In order to be able to evaluate each application in its individual context, the application form contains questions on personal circumstances. Responding to these questions is voluntary. But answering these questions may increase your chances of being awarded a scholarship. Your data will be treated confidentially.

I am currently a school pupil and have not yet been admitted to a program - what should I enter as “current program of study”?

How long should the letter of motivation be?
The length of your letter of motivation should not exceed 3800 numbers of characters, including spaces. As we are currently facing technical problems with the transfer of the text into the application screen, please use the figures given by word to receive the number of characters.

    4. Compability with other Grants / BAföG

Is it possible to receive more than one scholarship at the same time?
This depends on the amount and type of scholarship. Those who already receive a material grant rewarding talent and performance which totals €30 or more per month cannot receive a Deutschland Scholarship. This applies to students who receive a scholarship from the organization for the promotion of young talents (Begabtenförderungswerke), for example. You can find a detailed overview of scholarships and their compatibility with the Deutschland Scholarship here.

I am spending time abroad as part of the ERASMUS program or a DAAD program. Would that be double funding?
The Deutschland Scholarship can be combined with the ERASMUS program as long as you remain enrolled at the University of Mannheim without taking an academic leave of absence for the stay abroad. Grants from the DAAD cannot be combined with a Deutschland Scholarship.

I receive a Baden-Württemberg Stipendium. Does that mean I can no longer receive a Deutschland Scholarship?
The Deutschland Scholarship payments will be suspended for this period. You must inform the Deutschland Scholarship coordinators at the University of Mannheim that you are receiving a Baden-Württemberg Stipendium immediately. If you do not, then you may lose your entitlement to a scholarship.

Does the Deutschland Scholarship affect BAföG payments?
No. BAföG and the Deutschland Scholarship are two programs that complement each other. Students can receive funding from both of them at the same time without deductions being made.

Does the Deutschland Scholarship affect other social benefits (not BAföG)?
No. The Deutschland Scholarship does not count towards other social benefits such as housing subsidy or unemployment benefit received in the household.

Does the amount of money received through a Deutschland Scholarship decrease if I am in paid employment (such as a part-time job for students, for example)?
    No.

Are my chances of receiving a scholarship affected by my parents’ income? Does their income influence the amount of money I receive?
    No.

    5. Academic Leave of Absence, Internships, Semester Abroad

Can I receive the Deutschland Scholarship during temporary periods of study abroad?
Scholarship payments will continue if the holder is completing a study-related stay abroad. This applies regardless of a potential academic leave of absence from the University of Mannheim.
However, attention should be paid to the compatibility of the Deutschland Scholarship with other grants (see below).

Next semester, I will do an internship / semester abroad / I will be on academic leave. Does that mean I can no longer receive a Deutschland Scholarship?
Scholarship payments will be suspended during your leave of absence. When you return to studying, the duration of your academic leave of absence will be added onto the duration of your scholarship. You must inform the Deutschland Scholarship coordinators at the University of Mannheim of your academic leave of absence immediately. If you do not, then you may lose your entitlement to a scholarship.

Is it still possible to receive a Deutschland Scholarship during an academic leave of absence if I am completing an internship that is relevant to my degree program?
A differentiation between a compulsory internship in Germany or abroad, and other internships must be made here. Compulsory internships in Germany are part of the program of study and are no obstacle for the Scholarship. Internships abroad are treated similarly provided that they are included in the respective program of study; they can be treated as “study-related periods abroad”. If the Scholarship holder takes an academic leave of absence for another internship which is not included in the study regulations, scholarship payments will be suspended during this time.

    6. Data Protection

Why should I agree to my contact details being given to the sponsor?
The University of Mannheim considers Deutschland Scholarships as more than financial support and would like to facilitate contact between scholarship holders and sponsors to allow for long-term relationships.

Does the funding organization receive my application?
No. Only those employees at the University of Mannheim who are in charge of the selection of scholarship holders can access your application. If you are awarded a scholarship, the sponsor receives your contact details provided that you have agreed to this by signing the data privacy protection note.
