Synopsis of the Books of the Bible

We here list the Books of the Bible in an order that - with minor variations - is common in current Bible editions. The Latin name is given first, followed by its English (E) and German (D) variations in parentheses.

Our short list of apocryphal (deuterocanonical) books is of course contestable. Neither was there a consensus about the canon of the Bible in the early modern period, nor is there one today. Our primary concern here is not to encumber the user of our list of references by unnecessary, if exact, information.

How to move around in this demo

Following the hyperlink in the heading of a group of biblical books in this synopsis will open a list of references to these books contained in Hofmann's Lexicon Universale as identified by our pattern matching tools. Activating a link in these listings will load the respective excerpt from the transcribed version of Hofmann in the right hand frame.

Alternatively, one might choose to browse the - excerpted and transcribed - Lexicon Universale itself in the frame on the right, making use of annotated references to the Bible there to open a list with related references in this left hand frame.

In case of a loss of orientation, there is always the link on the very top/bottom of each page, which leads right back to the home page of each frame.
