Internationalization of Doctoral Education@the University of Mannheim

Funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the University of Mannheim has successfully launched the IPID4all program to further promote the internationalization of doctoral education. The program is intended for excellent international graduates who want to pursue a doctoral degree in Mannheim as well as all domestic doctoral candidates who pursue their degrees in structured doctoral programs or individual doctorates. Grant authority is the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). In 2017, the university successfully applied for a second project phase and was granted further funding until June 2019.

IPID4all is an essential pillar of the University of Mannheim's internationalization strategy and serves to expand the university's exchange efforts and increase its competitiveness as a global player in research and education. Several long term measures have been developed to bring to life the visions of "Internationalization@home" and "Internationalization Abroad". In order to increase the university's visibility as an innovative and internationally renowned research hub, all IPID4all measures aim at both: intensifying research and international cooperation by sending excellent doctoral candidates abroad and inviting accomplished graduates, scholars and researchers to Mannheim.

Strategic decisions such as the establishment of the Graduate School of Economic & Social Sciences (2006), the Welcome Center for international scholars (2006) and instituting an International Campus (2013) with English as a lingua franca show that the internationalization of research and education has become a priority. IPID4all ties in with these measures and allows for implementing a thorough plan to support the internationalization of doctoral education at the University of Mannheim.
