Free-Mover to Mannheim

Due to high demand, the number of places available to free-movers, i.e. students who want to study at the University of Mannheim for one or two semesters (no degree-seeking students!) without taking part in an exchange program is very limited. If you would like to apply on your own initiative, you should be aware of the fact that free-mover applications are evaluated under very strict criteria.

Which prerequisites must be met in order to be accepted to the University of Mannheim as a free-mover?
You must be registered as a student abroad and have studied two academic years in the major you wish to pursue at the University of Mannheim. In addition, you should have a good idea of the courses you plan to take and be able to certify your level of English language proficiency (at least B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

Which certified documents must be sent along with the application?

  • Application form (word file)
  • Secondary School Leaving Certificate
  • Official transcript of records from your home university covering a period of two successful consecutive years of study
  • Certifcate of enrollment at your home university
  • Certificates/report cards of English language proficiency
  • Detailed description of your plans to study at the University of Mannheim (study proposal, in English or German)
  • Resume

PLEASE NOTE: All documents issued not in English or German language have to be translated into English or German and submitted with the certified copy of the original.

When are the application deadlines?

The application deadline is 15 April for the fall semester and 15 October for the spring semester. The respective Faculty and the International Office evaluate all free-mover applications together. Applicants will be notified by the end of June for the fall semester and by the end of November for the spring semester.

Tuition fees for international students

The State of Baden-Württemberg will introduce tuition fees for international students who will study starting from fall semester 2017. International students will be required to pay €1,500 per semester. The fees are for international students who enter for the purpose of study.

Excluded from the tuition fees are: students who are EU citizens or citizens of a member state of the European Economic Area (EEA), refugees, and international students who received their general qualification for university entrance (Abitur) in Germany. Moreover, students with established living conditions in Germany are also excluded from the fees.


What are additional fees for free-movers?

In addition to the semester contribution of €77.20 every free-mover student is charged an administrative fee of €70 per semester. Furthermore, every free-mover student has to pay a fee for the Student Body Representative Committee (AStA) of  €5.85. In total the additional fees are €156.70.
