Education Loans (Bildungskredit)

The "Bildungskredit", an education loan programme offered by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research enables students, independent of their parent's income, to apply for a low-interest loan with the Deutsche Ausgleichbank for example to study abroad or to complete a placement abroad.  To receive funding to study abroad, you must provide proof that at least part of the study abroad period can be accredited at your home university.

The maximum volume of credit amounts to 7,200 Euros, and the maximum monthly rate is 300 Euros.

Further characteristics of the Bildungskredit:

  • If you are only abroad for a short time but anticipate high expenses, a one time payment can be requested (maximum of 3,600 Euros).
  • The one time payment is also available for longer time abroad so that you can receive the one time payment as well as the regular instalments of up to 300 Euros.
  • You must begin repaying the loan four years after the first instalment  at a monthly rate of 120 Euros. The interest rate is quite low.
  • The loan is independent from your own income and assets and those of your parents or spouse.
  • Combination with other financial support- like BAföG - is possible.
  • An education loan is available to full-age pupils and students, who are in an advanced phase of their education. Non-German students can apply for this loan only if they fulfill certain conditions, similar to those required in the BAföG regulations - please check the (German-only) website mentioned below or contact us for help.
